Haywire The Bub 2012

Sparkle this Holiday Season with
Haywire The Bub!

Haywire-TheBub-Bubbles

750 ml | pH 3.34 | TA 6.4 | RS 10.4 | Alc 12.3%

The Bub 2012; 51% Pinot Noir, 49% Chardonnay. These grapes were grown in a cool mountain vineyard site near Oliver, whole cluster pressed, fermented cool, and secondary bottle-fermented. Aged in the classic method, warm disgorged and finished with a small amount of sweet white dosage.
Stony, slatey, mineral characters, with surprising yeastiness. Closed with a crown cap to ensure this wine tastes just as winemaker Michael Bartier intends, this wine bursts with crisp and elegant green-apple – a lively expression of Okanagan freshness.

Celebrate Year of The Sheep with Haywire Lunar Wines

Lunar White Haywire Lunar New Year White 2013 features an artistically designed Chinese character of the “sheep”, crafted by Haywire Winery to welcome the Year of the Sheep in 2015 and to pair perfectly with Asian cuisine.

[Summerland, BC] With the dynamic Asian dining culture in Vancouver and the holiday season fast approaching, Okanagan Crush Pad owners, Christine Coletta and Steve Lornie bring back a special limited release of Haywire Lunar New Year wines to enhance the local Asian dining experience.

When Haywire wines released its first Lunar New Year wines in Winter 2014, along with their Asian Pairing Flavours with BC Wines Program, 60 cases of this specialty wine sold out within days as the Asian community in BC prepared for their most important annual family celebration, Lunar New Year.

To meet the high demand of Lunar New Year wines, Haywire increased this year’s production and released 200 cases each of the red and white Lunar New Year wines which launched on December 1st, 2014.

This second release of BC’s first purpose-built wine is a unique holiday gift to celebrate Lunar New Year and to welcome the Year of the Sheep, while embracing the bounty of our local Summerland wine. Reflecting the personality of the Sheep in the Chinese Zodiac, the 2015 Haywire Lunar New Year wine label features an artistically designed Chinese symbol of “sheep” on colours of gold and red for good luck, prosperity, and happiness.

Coletta shares, “We’re so excited for the return of our second annual Haywire Lunar New Year wines. The Lunar New Year wine is the key we have been looking for to connect Vancouver’s vibrant Asian food scene and BC’s finest wines.”

Read on to learn about this special bottling, dos and don’ts for pairing, and to access recipes and photos click here.

A Special BC Wine

A limited release of only 200 cases each, the wines were created in celebration of the Lunar New Year and to welcome the Year of the Sheep.

Haywire-2012LunarRedWhiteHaywire Lunar New Year Red 2012 ($23.00) and Haywire Lunar New Year White 2013 ($20.00) have been created to work in perfect harmony with local cuisine found in our Asian community.

The Lunar Red is made from Gamay Noir grapes with a small amount of Syrah. Bright blackberry fruit and fresh juicy finish with slight caramel notes.

Loaded with meaty, white pepper aromas and flavours with a long, earthy finish.

Pair with stir fried vegetables, grilled sable fish, BBQ duck, or enjoy on its own.

The Lunar White is a blend of Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, and Viognier which exhibits fresh lifted aromatics of spice and floral notes. A lush mouthfeel coats the palate with tropical fruit while retaining delicacy and freshness.

Pair with fresh steamed seafood, seafood soup, fried noodles or rice, or enjoy on its own.

To order the wines or learn where else to find it, contact Whitney Law at the winery at 604-800-0601 | whitney@okanagancrushpad.com

A Delicious Initiative

Coupled with this wine release, Haywire has also developed a food and wine pairing initiative for the Asian market. The team worked with well-known food author and broadcaster Stephanie Yuen and journalist and food stylist Nathan Fong to develop a program and guide of how to pair flavours from various parts of Asia with the flavour profiles that emerge from BC wines. The results are truly delicious and are aimed to get people to think of pairing wine with Asian cuisine both at home and while dining out.

There are misconceptions that only sweeter wines or big bold reds are the only choices that are made for Asian cuisines and entertaining situations.

As an example of the program, consider Long Life Noodles, paired with Haywire Lunar New Year White 2013. The winery has made it easy: click here for recipes by Nathan Fong, photographed by John Sherlock.

Press Release: Route 97 Wines

Okanagan Crush Pad Journeys into Deliciousness with Launch of First Exclusive Wine for VQA Stores – Route 97

18866_ 004

Okanagan Crush Pad winery is pleased to announce the release of two wines under a new Route 97 label which will be sold exclusively at BC VQA stores commencing Thursday, November 27. The colourful labels depict iconic symbols of the Okanagan while the wines celebrate the diverse offerings of our land; a delicate aromatic cool climate white from the north and a fruit forward, robust red from the south. Route 97 wines are crafted by Matt Dumayne at Okanagan Crush Pad in Summerland, BC. Located around the province, BC VQA flagship wine shops promote excellence and celebrate our talented winemakers and the diversity of our unique cool climate wine region.

“While our team has created many wine labels in the past, it was an interesting exercise to create something exclusively for BC VQA stores that would fill a void in their current product offering. The store owners wanted wines that over delivered in quality and had an eye-catching, colourful label that celebrated the great attributes of the Okanagan,” noted Okanagan Crush Pad owner Christine Coletta. “The label style is reminiscent of the old road side diner placemats I remember colouring as a child. The end result is something our team and the store owners are very excited about. The BC VQA stores are a very important channel for local wineries as they are a showcase for what our region has to offer. We hope this will be the first of many more exclusive products for the BC VQA stores.”

The Route 97 Meandering White 2013 is a blend of Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Viognier. Fresh, lifted aromatics of flowers and tropical fruit mingle with a round fruit density while retaining delicacy and freshness. The wine will be priced at $17.99. The Route 97 Big Adventure Red 2013 is a blend of Gamay Noir, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Syrah. The wine showcases bright red berries and jam layered over subtle French oak toastiness. Lifted floral and perfume notes highlight the vibrancy and freshness of the Okanagan. The red wine will be priced at $18.99.

Jeff Wong, proprietor of Swirl Wine Stores around BC, comments, “This new wine creation was an exciting process and working with everyone at Okanagan Crush Pad was really a blast. The label creation was almost as much fun as creating the wine blends! The label takes you on a BC Wine country journey down Route 97. With the continued trend of wine consumers looking for an approachable red and white blend, we worked with Matt and Christine to create these wines without compromising quality. These wines are great examples of quality BC wines for under $20.00.”

Happy Wine Wednesday!

Wine critics have spoken – choose Haywire wines this Thanksgiving! Also, join us for a fundraiser benefiting PADS, participate in a winemakers dinner, and visit us this weekend for deals.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and wine critics have chosen Haywire wines to pair perfectly with your turkey (and non-turkey) feast.

Haywire-GamayNoir2012Haywire Gamay Noir 2012 with Stuffing as recommended by Kurtis Kolt at The Georgia Straight:

While there are many options for pairing with stuffing, let’s stick to some fairly common components like sourdough bread, fresh sage, hazelnuts, onion, celery, and a good dusting of salt and pepper. You have some distinct flavours going on here, but it’s the sage that’s catching my eye. When we talk South Okanagan terroir, there’s plenty of sage that grows wild, and with its aromatics in the breeze, it’s not uncommon for wines to express a little of this influence. Let’s put a red wine on the table but not get too heavy, since we don’t want to overwhelm any subtle flavours. Haywire 2012 Gamay Noir is a softer red that has a velvety texture and a slightly earthy side with wild mushroom, dried plums, currants, and a whisper of that telltale B.C. sage. Happy Wine Wednesday! It’s time for our 2nd annual Rosé Smack Down!

The Gloves are Off for a Rosé Smack Down

Michael Bartier and David Scholefield are once again defending their favourite rosés. Michael Bartier is on team Haywire while David Scholefield is putting up a fight for Bartier Scholefield. Here’s what they have to say about their favourite rosés:

Bartier-Scholefield_BoxingMichael Bartier on the Haywire Rosé:

Wine should be judged on its ability to evoke and articulate its origin. The 2011 Haywire Gamay Noir Rosé is a wine of the Okanagan Valley, specifically the Secrest Mountain Vineyard. Being from there, we know it is grown in glacial till rich in minerals, with calcium carbonate, granite, and basalt present.
Our lexicon includes the words “fresh”, “pristine”, “beautiful”, “clean”, “bright”, “crisp”, “bountiful”, “refreshing”, and so on.
With the Gamay Noir Rosé, we have a wine with aromas of minerality, fresh berries and tree fruits, and with a remarkable and pristine refreshing structure. To conclude if this is a great wine or not, I’ll simply refer to a quote from a great man, “Great wine articulates, great wine evokes, and of course, great wine tastes great.”

David Scholefield on the Bartier Scholefield Rosé:

For us in the Okanagan, if place matters, rosé matters.
We believe that Okanagan rosé can be one of the world’s classic cool-climate wine styles, proving once and for all that rosé can be very much more than sweet, concocted ‘vino-pop’.
BS Rosé is 100% Gamay, always destined to be pink not red, with the belief that rosé is the highest and best use of this fruit. The wine is lipsmackingly crisp, with tangy, cranberry/raspberry fruit and a lovely leafy/earthy undertone. Like all great rosés, it has the tannic grip that proclaims seriousness; but it also has the astonishing glossy texture that makes great rosé such a joy to drink, and finishes with a sage-y savoury note that is pure Okanagan DNA.

Who will win this battle? You be the judge!
